'The Pale Blue Dot'

This is a break from my typical posts on forests. I came across this video through a friend’s post on facebook and I though it is worth posting since it motivated me to continue caring about one another and become more passionate about caring for the environment.

This is a video (THE SAGAN SERIES - The Pale Blue Dot) demonstrating the importance of our planet for our existence and that there is no one to save us from ourselves. The astronomer Carl Sagan narrates this video very effectively in my opinion to alert the viewers and to think about the way forward.

Enjoy!!

The following post will be on the destruction of the Rainforest biome by deforestation.

  1. Hi Nikol - thought the video was great and emphasised the reason why we are all doing this course - I think it's things like this video that are good for communicating the need for action to the public - perhaps better than scientific papers! Not sure what you think? I also found this interactive map on deforestation today (it makes scary viewing) and so am looking forward to reading your next post to find out what's going on!

    1. Hello Darren,

Thank you for you comment and for the vary interesting and helpful interactive map that I have to admit I was very impressed by the resolution id the data. I will definitely be using this map in my next posts. I agree with you that this is the type of communication needed so that the public is engaged on a personal level rather than scientific papers. In my opinion scientific papers are made to provide the knowledge and not necessarily to engage the public. This is one of the ways where scientific knowledge can be translated to the general public.

  3. Hi Nikol,

Thanks for sharing! You're right, watching this video does urge the viewer to think about some of humankind's most difficult challenges - it is both inspiring and frightening. I think it's good to be reminded of the fact that there is only one place like Earth (that we know of at least). Darren, I agree that good communication tools are needed to engage the public on these tough environmental issues.

Looking forward to your post on deforestation.

    Cheers,
    Katherine

    1. Hello Katherine,

Thank you for your comment. I am glad that we (including Darren) have the same opinion on the matter of communication where even though we have a scientific background and we can understand some of the science better that the public we recognize that there is a gap between scientific papers and the public.
